Sliding fire doors

A sliding fire door is a horizontally sliding, fire-rated door used where a swing door isn't practical — wide openings, constrained floor space, or high-traffic routes. Alpha Door Solutions manufactures sliding fire doors in Gauteng and serves Western Cape projects through a Cape Town contact, in single and double leaf configurations, for commercial, healthcare and education projects across South Africa.

Overview

Sliding fire doors provide fire compartmentation in the same way a hinged fire door does, but the leaf travels horizontally on a track rather than swinging on hinges. This suits openings where floor space for a swinging leaf isn't available, where the opening is too wide for a practical hinged door, or where the traffic pattern through the opening favours a sliding configuration.

Applications

  • Commercial buildings — wide corridors and service openings
  • Healthcare facilities — departments requiring fire separation without swing-door floor space
  • Educational institutions — high-traffic corridors and hall openings
  • Residential environments — communal fire compartment openings
  • High-security environments — combined with security requirements where applicable

Performance

Sliding fire doors are built to provide fire compartmentation and meet fire safety code requirements for the opening they serve.

Available configurations

  • Single leaf horizontal sliding fire door
  • Double leaf horizontal sliding fire door

Datasheets and technical specifications for specific configurations are compiled per project — see Downloads below.

Certifications and compliance

Alpha's sliding fire doors are tested and certified to SANS 1253 and SANS 10400-T, and manufactured to SABS and SANS industrial safety regulations. Test reports are held on file and not published online, because they contain proprietary construction detail. Certification evidence can be reviewed or supplied on request for a specified project — contact Alpha through the enquiry form or by phone.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • When should I specify a sliding fire door instead of a hinged fire door?

Sliding fire doors suit openings where there isn’t floor space for a swinging leaf, where the opening is too wide for a practical hinged door, or where traffic patterns favour a sliding configuration. Hinged fire doors remain the standard choice for typical corridor and room openings.

  • What standard are sliding fire doors specified against?

Alpha’s sliding fire doors are tested and certified to SANS 1253, the South African standard for fire doors and fire shutters, and to SANS 10400-T. Test reports are held on file and available on request for a specified project.

  • Are sliding fire doors available in double leaf configurations?

Yes. Alpha manufactures sliding fire doors in both single leaf and double leaf horizontal sliding configurations, suited to wide openings requiring fire compartmentation.

  • Do you supply sliding fire doors in Johannesburg and Pretoria?

Yes. Alpha manufactures sliding fire doors in Gauteng and supplies commercial, healthcare and education projects across Johannesburg, Pretoria and the wider Gauteng region, with supply available nationally for suitable projects.

  • Do you supply sliding fire doors in Cape Town and the Western Cape?

Yes. Alpha manufactures sliding fire doors in Gauteng and serves Western Cape projects through a Cape Town contact. See Contact for details.
