Fire doors

A fire door is a hinged door engineered to hold back fire and smoke for a defined period, protecting escape routes and fire compartments. Alpha Door Solutions manufactures fire doors in Gauteng and serves Western Cape projects through a Cape Town contact, specified against SANS 1253 and SANS 10400 Part T, in single and double leaf configurations for commercial, healthcare and industrial projects across South Africa.

Overview

Fire doors are a legal requirement in South African buildings wherever the National Building Regulations call for fire compartmentation or protected escape routes. Alpha's fire doors are specified against SANS 1253, the South African standard covering fire doors and fire shutters, and against the fire protection framework set out in SANS 10400 Part T.

Applications

  • Fire compartment walls in commercial, healthcare and industrial buildings
  • Protected escape routes and fire-isolated stairwells
  • Plant rooms, risers and service corridors requiring fire separation
  • Storage and processing areas separated for fire risk

Performance

Fire door performance is assessed against four criteria:

CriterionWhat it measures
IntegrityThe door holds back flame and hot gases without gaps exceeding specified limits
StabilityThe leaf stays within its frame without excessive movement during fire exposure
InsulationMean temperature rise on the unexposed face does not exceed 140°C above ambient
Impact resistanceFor Classes C and D, the leaf resists impact without openings exceeding 25mm

Available configurations

  • Single leaf hinged fire door (single action)
  • Double leaf hinged fire door (single action)

Frame options include double-rebated and single-rebated construction, fitted as built-in, bolt-on or drywall applications depending on the wall type.

Certifications and compliance

Alpha's fire doors are tested and certified to SANS 1253 and SANS 10400-T, which apply the National Building Regulations to fire safety in South African buildings. Test reports are held on file and not published online, because they contain proprietary construction detail. Certification evidence can be reviewed or supplied on request for a specified project — contact Alpha through the enquiry form or by phone.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • What standard are Alpha's fire doors specified against?

Alpha’s fire doors are tested and certified to SANS 1253, the South African standard for fire doors and fire shutters, and to SANS 10400-T, which applies the National Building Regulations to fire safety. Test reports are held on file and available on request for a specified project.

  • What is the fire rating of Alpha's fire doors?

Fire door performance is assessed against integrity, stability, insulation and impact resistance criteria; specific rating durations for individual configurations will be published once test documentation is confirmed. Contact Alpha with your compartment’s rating requirement to discuss suitable configurations.

  • What's the difference between single leaf and double leaf fire doors?

A single leaf fire door has one door panel in the frame, suited to standard corridor and room openings. A double leaf fire door has two panels, used for wider openings such as plant rooms and service corridors where a single leaf isn’t practical.

  • Can fire doors be installed in a drywall partition?

Yes. Alpha’s fire door frames are available for built-in, bolt-on or drywall applications, matched to the wall construction on your project.

  • Do you supply fire doors in Johannesburg and Pretoria?

Yes. Alpha manufactures fire doors in Gauteng and supplies projects across Johannesburg, Pretoria and the wider Gauteng region, with supply available nationally for suitable projects.

  • Do you supply fire doors in Cape Town and the Western Cape?
