Lead-lined doors

A lead-lined door is a laminated door with a central lead sheet lining, custom-built to shield X-ray, CT and other diagnostic rooms from radiation exposure. Alpha Door Solutions manufactures lead-lined doors in Gauteng and serves Western Cape projects through a Cape Town contact, in hinged and sliding configurations, with lead thickness matched to the specific equipment's output, for healthcare projects across South Africa.

Timber-finish lead-lined door leading into an X-ray room

Overview

Lead-lined doors are laminated door assemblies with a lead sheet positioned centrally within the leaf, custom-designed and manufactured to suit project-specific requirements rather than supplied as a standard size and thickness. The lead thickness required is determined by the radiation exposure levels of the specific X-ray or radiation-producing equipment installed in the room, so lead-lined doors are specified per room, not per building.

Applications

  • Medical X-ray rooms
  • CT scan facilities
  • Hospitals and clinics
  • Diagnostic imaging rooms
  • Doctors' rooms using radiation-producing equipment

Performance

Shielding performance is set by the lead thickness specified for the room, which is calculated against the radiation output of the installed equipment.

Available configurations

  • Hinged lead-lined doors — standard swing configuration for room entrances
  • Sliding lead-lined doors — for openings where a swing door isn't practical

Both configurations can include a lead-impregnated glass vision panel, framed in 1.6mm mild steel, in custom sizes to suit the room layout.

Certifications and compliance

Alpha's lead-lined doors are manufactured to suit SABS and SANS industrial safety regulations.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • How is the lead thickness for a lead-lined door determined?

Lead thickness is calculated per room, based on the radiation exposure levels of the specific X-ray, CT or other radiation-producing equipment installed. This is typically confirmed in consultation with the project’s medical physicist — involve Alpha early in specification so the door can be built to the confirmed requirement.

  • Can a lead-lined door include a vision panel?

Yes. Lead-lined doors can be fitted with a lead-impregnated glass panel, equivalent in shielding to the door leaf, framed in 1.6mm mild steel and sized to suit the room layout.

  • Are lead-lined doors available in sliding configurations?

Yes. Alpha manufactures lead-lined doors in both hinged and sliding configurations, so the shielding requirement can be met even where a swing door isn’t practical for the room layout.

  • Do you supply lead-lined doors in Johannesburg and Pretoria?

Yes. Alpha manufactures lead-lined doors in Gauteng and supplies healthcare projects across Johannesburg, Pretoria and the wider Gauteng region, with supply available nationally for suitable projects.

  • Do you supply lead-lined doors in Cape Town and the Western Cape?

Yes. Alpha manufactures lead-lined doors in Gauteng and serves Western Cape healthcare projects through a Cape Town contact. See Contact for details.

  • What information do you need to quote a lead-lined door?

The radiation-producing equipment’s specification (to calculate required lead thickness), the room’s opening dimensions, and whether a vision panel is required. See Contact to start an enquiry — involving Alpha alongside your medical physicist early avoids rework later.
