December 22, 2020All fire rated doors supplied are designed to meet the requirements of SANS 10400: Part T – Fire Protection and SANS 1253 – Fire Doors and Fire Shutters. These standards define the performance criteria fire doors must achieve under prescribed fire exposure conditions.
Fire rated doors form a critical part of any fire safety plan. Their primary purpose is to save lives while protecting buildings and their contents during a fire. In South Africa, fire rated doors are a legal requirement and must comply with the relevant national standards governing fire protection.
Fire Door Performance Criteria
Fire rated doors are assessed according to the following performance requirements:
Integrity
The ability of the door or assembly to withstand fire exposure without developing straight‑through gaps exceeding the limits specified in the standard.
Stability
The ability of the door or assembly to remain within the frame during fire exposure without excessive movement.
Insulation
The ability of the door or assembly to limit temperature rise on the unexposed side during fire exposure. The mean temperature rise must not exceed 140°C above ambient temperature.
Impact Resistance
Applicable to Class C and D assemblies only, measuring the door’s ability to resist impact without forming openings wider than 25mm
